Flying with CBD inside the US

Hemp-derived CBD and other hemp goods such as supplements are now acceptable on the federal level, thanks to the approval of the 2018 Farm Bill. This means that CBD products made from hemp plants with less than 0.3% THC can be carried across state borders, including by plane.

However, if you bring CBD oil with you, it will still be subject to the TSA’s 3-1-1 rule. While there are a few exceptions, such as breast milk, liquid prescriptions, and some other substances, CBD oil is not among them. You should also be certain about the source of your CBD product and its THC content.

How to fly with CBD domestically

To begin, CBD drops and beauty products in your carry-on bag must adhere to the same rules as other liquids. As a result, whatever liquid CBD products you have must be in a vessel no larger than 100 ml.

Following that, you must keep your CBD product in its original packaging. So, do not repack it in another container because it will be difficult to show that you are carrying a legal CBD product.

More importantly, the THC concentration of the CBD product must be clearly displayed on the label. You should not carry any supplements to the airport if the label does not state their THC content.

Flying with CBD internationally

Globally, there are no uniform rules on CBD. However, similar to the US, many regulatory bodies give CBD products clearance as long as they include only a trace amount of THC.

Even so, laws differ by country and should be thoroughly researched before flying. While you may go through screenings at a US airport before your trip, if you fly to a country where CBD is not authorized, you may face legal consequences.

So, if you think that researching a country’s hemp and marijuana laws would be too time-consuming, it is best to skip the CBD item. Furthermore, just because CBD is legal does not mean TSA officers and customs agents will not question you for it.

When it comes to hemp-derived CBD products, they are now federally legal, so you can bring them on domestic flights. However, overseas travel requires research on local laws. So, do your homework and consider whether carrying your CBD item is worth the trouble.
